> Transpacific's new Port Augusta Resource Recovery Centre and Transfer Station diverts 3000 tonnes of waste from landfill in the first six months.

Port Augusta residents are noticing a positive difference in the handling of their waste following the September opening of the new Transpacific Resource Recovery Centre and Transfer Station.

Meeting strict environmental controls, the new-look Transfer Station and Resource Recovery Centre is dramatically reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfill by segregating materials that can be economically recycled (including green waste, construction and demolition waste, steel, paper and cardboard) into appropriate areas.

In operation for just under six months, the site has already received more than 6,620 tonnes of material - successfully diverting 45 per cent of this from ending up in landfill.

Transpacific Cleanaway SA Landfills Division Manager Geoffrey Webster said by implementing a fee structure to reward users for segregating their recyclable waste from general waste, the site was achieving its purpose to reduce materials sent to landfill.

“By working with the local community to divert their waste from landfill, we can promote the ongoing use for many of these materials in a new form, while also preventing large amounts of energy being used to remake certain materials,” he said.

Port Augusta City Council Mayor, Mrs Joy Baluch, said the facility was an example of a positive outcome for the local community when government works with a proactive and enthusiastic business partner like Transpacific.

“Port Augusta City Council is committed to ensuring we are a leader in the region for pursuing green strategies that reduce waste to landfill, and this site achieves this while also providing local businesses and ratepayers with the best possible facilities,” she said.

Residual waste, or waste that cannot be effectively recycled at the new transfer station is transported to Transpacific’s award winning Northward Fill site, located approximately 85 km north-west of Adelaide at Inkerman. The Northward Fill site is an above ground facility which receives processed waste from EPA approved Resource Recovery.
